5 Tips to Look More Awake

Brittany Trautman 5 tips to look more awake

Hola chicas! Hope you all are doing well! I am out of town this week for work and working looong shifts. Needless to say, I look like a walking zombie. Travel + lack of sleep can really get to a girl…. which got me thinking 😉 Even though when I roll out of bed I feel like I have just fallen asleep and have such bad bags under my eyes they might as well be designer 🙂 , I have a few tips and tricks that help me look more awake than I actually am. Let’s be honest, even when I’m not traveling and working normal hours, I don’t always get a full night’s rest and sometimes even when I do, I look like I haven’t slept for days, lol. My skin is dull, my eyes look tired, bags for days, the list goes on and on. But through this, I’ve learned a few things about applying my makeup and using certain products that help disguise this and I figured this week would be the perfect week to share since I’ve been using these tips everyday! Because who doesn’t want to look like they got more sleep than they actually did? Whether that’s staying up late from binge watching Netflix, working on a project into the wee hours of the night, or maybe you’re a new mom that doesn’t get any sleep, these tips will be your new best friend!

First tip: De-puff/refresh your under eyes. I started using cooling eye gels for underneath my eyes this year and these are life changing! My personal favorites are the Skyn Iceland Gels and the Earth Therapeutics Hydrogel eye patches, but I know there are a lot out there on the market from inexpensive to higher end that do the same thing. Basically any cooling/de-puffing eye gel/patch is going to de-puff, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, improve blood flow (which plumps), reduce dark circles, and ultimately soothe and cool your under eye area. In return, it leaves that delicate area feeling refreshed and rejuvenated which allows you to look more awake and can aid in getting rid of those pesty bags and dark circles! Even if you’re not a sufferer of dark circles, bags, or puffy under eyes (lucky you, I’m jealous!), these feel so refreshing and amazing so I would still recommend them! I like to use these before I apply my makeup in the morning while getting ready. Also, a little trick I add is that I will occasionally use the gels more than once before tossing them. I use them, put them back in the package, and pop them in the freezer. This keeps them cool and it’s even more refreshing this way!

Second tip: Concealer, concealer, and more concealer. If you only take away one piece from this post, let it be this! I apply concealer in my every day makeup routine, however, when I notice my dark circles are particularly bad or I feel suuuuper exhausted, I like to double up on two types of concealers. Before I apply my regular highlighting concealer, I put a base down of color correcting concealer. My personal fav is the Benefit Erase Paste. Although, this product is now named Boi-ing Brightening Concealer, mine is just just the old version 🙂 It is an orange/salmon color that cancels out the dark/blue undertones of my dark circles. I pat this ONLY on my dark circle, not all over my entire under eye area. I use a thin layer because this concealer has a thicker consistency, so if I use too much, it will crease and look cakey. Then, I move onto my normal step of highlighting/concealing. I recommend using a shade or two lighter than your foundation/skin tone for under the eyes for the purpose of highlighting and brightening. My current fav is the Maybelline FaceStudio Master Conceal in shade light, and I’ve had my eye on the Tarte Shape Tape for awhile which is a cult favorite. I haven’t been able to get the Tarte Shape Tape in my desired shade, but I’ve heard the Maybelline Master Conceal is a drugstore dupe for it! Either of these will brighten the under eye area and make you look awake and like you got all the sleep in the world. I apply the concealer in a triangle under my eye and a little trick I add is I put it on my eyelids and blend it up towards the corner of my eyes towards my temples as well. My eyelids are naturally darker than the rest of my face, so when I blend my concealer in that area, again, it adds to the overall brightness of the eyes and helps aid in looking more awake. Then, by blending my concealer up towards my temples, this lifts the eye area as a whole. Almost like a mini facelift, lol. The combination of the salmon color corrector and the brightening shade of concealer gives an overall highlighted, lifted, and awake look to the eyes which is exactly what we want!

Third tip: Nude eyeliner in your waterline. I often don’t wear any eyeliner in my bottom water line because I find that it makes my eyes look smaller, which I personally don’t like on myself. Instead, I apply shadow on my bottom lash line which helps to define it but isn’t as harsh as a black eyeliner in the waterline. But on days where I want to look extra, extra awake, I will still apply my normal dark brown shadow to my lower lash line, but I’ll also add a nude eyeliner to the bottom waterline. When I first saw someone try this, I thought it would look odd on me, but I actually love it! It completely brightens the eye itself and makes your eyes look fresh and awake. I find that when extreme exhaustion has kicked in, my eyes get bloodshot and my waterline is actually red so the nude liner disguises this! I’ve even seen some beauty gurus also use white eyeliner in their water line which has the same affect, but that is personally too stark for me so the nude is a great alternative! Some of my fav nude liners are the Essence Eye Pencil in Silky Nude and the NYX Wonder Pencil in Light.

Fourth tip: Brighten with eye shadow. I do this in my every day makeup routine, but when I’m extra tired, I just amp it up! I use a cream/bone colored shadow in the inner corner of my eye because this area tends to have shadow and darkness. This really helps to brighten that area. I also apply this same color to my brow bone because this lifts the eye as a whole. My fav eye shadow for this is the NYX single shadow in shade Vixen. If you’re a little fairer in skin tone than me, you could go even lighter and try an off white or even white eye shadow for this. Sometimes I go a step further and apply my fav highlighter in these same areas on top of the cream shadow. This not only ties in with the highlighter on my cheek bones, making the whole face cohesive, but it also adds a pop of shimmer to this area which obviously brightens in return! In my Holy Grail Makeup Post, I raved about my fav highlighter, Opal by Becca Cosmetics and this is the highlighter I use for this step!

Fifth tip: Skin mist. If you don’t already know, I’m an oily skin girl, and I usually stick to my NYX matte finish setting spray to set my makeup (chatted about this product in this post). But again, when the zombie is in full effect and I know I don’t have a fancy occasion or I won’t be hot/sweaty, I swap out my matte setting spray for the Mario Badescu Facial Spray. Not only does this smell like a dream, but it has SO many purposes. When I need a pick me up for my skin, I’ll spray this before applying my makeup and it literally wakes me up, lol. It feels amazing 🙂 I also use it to set my makeup when I’m done too. By using this instead of a matte setting spray, it gives a healthy looking glow to the skin that makes you look like you got all the beauty rest in the world! I love to carry this stuff in my purse and re-spray in the middle of the day to re-hydrate, add dewiness, and give myself a little pick me up if my coffee isn’t working, lol. This stuff is also great for dry hair I’ve heard, but I haven’t tried it for that purpose myself. There are a million ways to use this product. Also, this spray is great for all skin types and is gentle enough for sensitive skin.

These five steps added to my makeup routine on days when I look like a hot mess really do make a difference. They not only make my skin feel more hydrated and awake, but they help me look awake and put together even when I barely get any sleep! Because let’s be honest, there aren’t enough hours in the day to complete every item on our to-do list’s. My favorite thing is that these steps make my skin look like a better version of itself without making it look cakey, dry, or dull. Also, if you’re a coffee lover like me, just add coffee to the end of these five steps and you’ll really feel awake!! 😉 Let me know what your favorite way to look awake is down below!

Xoxo

I LOVE makeup. I love loving makeup! One of my favorite parts about being a makeup/beauty junkie is that I’m always trying new products and figuring out what works and adding it to my collection. I try not to switch things up TOO often just because changing up a lot of products often can cause breakouts if they don’t work for my skin AND let’s be honest, I can’t afford to try everything I have my eye on. Once I find a product I’m obsessed with, I purchase it over and over again because I know I can always go back to it and it will work. I want to put it out there that I have a combination/oily skin type and I am not prone to breakouts. Though these products may work for me, that doesn’t mean they will work for everyone, so please keep that in mind! Also, I have an olive-y skin tone so I hope that gives you a better idea as well. I wanted to share these products not only because they are my holy grail, but because I’m hoping that someone of you may love some of these products as well or try them out yourselves! Comment below if you love these too or if you’re going to try them out yourself!

  1. Revlon ColorStay Combination/ Oily Skin: This foundation is SO underrated. I never hear this foundation, or Revlon as a brand for that matter, talked about by any beauty influencers. Before our wedding in June, I spent a few months testing out foundations for the big day. I have oily skin so I was trying foundations that were marketed towards oil control. In addition to that, with our wedding being in June, it was most likely going to be hot so I wanted something that could last all day, be sweat/ water proof (I cried all day like a baby), and look amazing in pictures. I tried the Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless, Estée Lauder Double Wear, and the Revlon ColorStay Combination/Oily. Truth be told, I loved them all and still use them all, but my favorite out of the three was the Revlon (mic drop). I was SO shocked when I loved it as much as I did, because like I said, Revlon isn’t a hyped up brand that many people rave about. This foundation has a wide color range which is awesome and it did NOT look cakey or heavy but still was full coverage. Don’t get me wrong, there are days where I don’t go for a full coverage look, but on days like my wedding day or just days where I’m doing a full glam look, I want a full coverage foundation. Y’all, I’m not the type of girl who wants a “no makeup – makeup look.” Lol. I want to look fully glam and like I actually have makeup on… especially on my wedding day! Anyone else the same?! With that being said, I still wanted to look like myself, so I wasn’t going to wear SO much makeup that I didn’t look like myself or wear colors/ shades that I didn’t naturally gravitate towards, etc. This foundation can also be built up if you want a REALLY full coverage look. But I find that light layers still provide me the coverage I need. Another plus with this foundation is that it never felt heavy on my skin. Like I said, I love the full coverage look, but I don’t want to necessarily feel the foundation on my face… does that make sense? Lol. The Revlon ColorStay Foundation also comes in a Normal/Dry formula, so if you’re interested in this foundation but aren’t a combo/oily skin girl like me, I recommend trying that one! (You can find this for about $10 at Walmart, Target, Drug Stores, Ulta, and similar places
  2. Too Faced Dark Chocolate Soleil Deep/Tan Matte Bronzer: This bronzer is the perfect shade that can be used for both contouring and bronzing! Double Whammie! I use the dark chocolate shade and it’s the perfect mix of warm and cool tones that doesn’t look orange or gray and that’s why you can use it for bronzing or contouring. With my olive skin tone, I have had a hard time finding a perfect bronzer that wasn’t too light, but wasn’t orange. I’ve had this bronzer for over a year and haven’t put it down since! Not to mention, the product lasts a long time. I hit pan a few months ago, but it’s still kickin! This bronzer applies so seamlessly and is never chalky or choppy which I have experienced with other bronzers in the past. It comes in a lighter shade too (just regular Too Faced Chocolate Soliel Matte Bronzer), that would be perfect for someone a little more fair than me. Did I also mention that it smells like chocolate?! I mean come on, what’s better than that?! (You can find this bronzer at Ulta and Sephora for $30)
  3. NYX Shine Killer Primer: Alrighty, so I know not everyone uses primer, and to each their own. I must admit, I had tried a few primers over the years and never saw a difference in the way my makeup applied/ looked when using a primer. But when I found NYX Shine Killer, I think angels actually started singing! Dramatic much, lol?! If I could recommend ONE product in this whole wide world for a fellow oily skin girl, this is it! This primer is BOMB at filling in pores because it has a silicon consistency. On top of that, I apply it mostly to my T-zone where I get the most shiny and this acts as a barrier between my skin and the foundation. This is one of the only products that I can actually tell a difference with when I don’t wear it. It is truly a ‘shine killer’ and doesn’t let my oil peak through and break up my foundation which I struggled with for FOREVER. If you go out on the hottest day with the most make up on, this primer will keep your sweat and oils in control and it’s a lifesaver! Before I found this gem of a product, I often had to use blotting papers to soak up my oils. Eventually, my foundation would break up in those areas, and trust me, that was NOT a good look. This primer saved my life especially on my wedding day because I definitely felt like I was melting but my makeup stayed in place and matte all day. Also, the combination of this with the Revlon foundation I mentioned above is a match made in heaven! As if this product couldn’t get any better, it’s super affordable at only approx. $13! (You can find it at Target, Walmart, Drug Stores, and Ulta)
  4. Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed Highlighter in Opal: Highlighter is all the rage these days. Highlighter is definitely a trend I’m hoping sticks around. I usually stick to the more “natural” highlight look (because looking highlighted is TOTALLY natural right 😉 ) but there are certain occasions where I can build up this highlighter to make it pop more and that’s why I love it. With my olive-y skin tone, I tend to stay away from the frosty-white highlights because they look so stark and unnatural on my skin. In contrast, I also like to stay away from the extremely yellow/gold highlights because they don’t look the best when I’m at my palest. Becca is killing it these days with their products, ESPECIALLY their highlights that they are known for. Becca is a higher-end brand and at first I was thrown off by the price, but you truly get high-end quality with their highlighters! They are beautiful on the skin and are never chunky or patchy. It’s the worst when you try a highlighter and it’s straight glitter sparkles on your skin… not the look I go for! Opal specifically has the perfect mix of champagne/pearl tones that is absolutely stunning! If you are looking for a highlighter that adds a little glow to make it look like you’re glowing from within or a highlighter that makes you glow in the dark :), this is it!! (You can find this at Sephora and Ulta for $38)
  5. Tartelette 2 In Bloom Clay Eyeshadow Palette: YOU GUYS! If I had to pick ONE product to recommend for you to buy… one out of all of these… it’s this one! This eyeshadow palette is probably my most favorite/valued makeup purchase of ALL TIME and most definitely has given me the most bang for my buck! I don’t even know where to start. First off, the quality of these shadows is outta this world. These shadows are beautifully pigmented apply like a dream. The formula of these shadows could not be better. In terms of color range, this palette has every eyeshadow you could want when creating a simple, every day look, to a glam, smoky look. All the necessary light to dark shades a girl could ever want. It has the perfect light/medium browns to throw in your crease to give your lids a little dimension or to build upon with darker shades to make a blown out smoky eye. It has lighter shades as well for highlighting under your brow bone or the inner corner of your eye to add brightness and to make me look like I got more sleep than I actually did, lol. For the darker shadows, these are never patchy and always blend so flawlessly. They are pigmented, yet can be built up to make them darker and bolder. I love the variation of darker colors because you can create so many looks from a traditional black shadow that every girl needs in her makeup collection to my new found favorite reddish/warm browns. Finally, the sparkle/shimmer shadows are da bomb! They are the kind of shimmers that don’t let you down when you apply them with a brush. Ya know how some shimmers are so blah and not sparkly when you apply them to your lid straight and are absolutely pointless? Well these aren’t those shadows! The shimmers apply great with a flat lid brush or even your finger to add some sparkle to your eyes. For an even more metallic shimmer (even a wet looking shimmer), I like to spray my lid brush with my setting spray (mentioned later in this post) to dampen it, dip it in the shimmer and apply to my lid. This amps up the sparkle and pigment. You could also even wet your brush with a tad of water, contact solution (yes, contact solution), Mac Fix + spray, or even a glitter glue to get the same impact. I also love this palette not only because I get so much use and can make so many looks out of it, but the compact size is perfect for travel. I find that although some eyeshadow palettes have great shadows, if they are huge and can’t fit in my makeup bag, I don’t buy them because I want something that can fit and travel with me easily. Honestly, I could write a whole post solely dedicated to this palette, but I’ll spare you having to read 15 pages about eyeshadows 🙂 You guys NEED this palette! (You can find this at Sephora or Ulta for $46)
  6. Benefit Ka-BROW! Cream-Gel Eyebrow Color With Brush: I was ride or die for my Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Powder for years. Then one day I stumbled upon Benefit’s new (at the time) brow line. I wanted to try a pomade since I had been using a powder for so long to switch things up. I was nervous about trying pomades because sometimes they can look really stark and not as natural as brow powders. But ever since I used the Ka-Brow, I haven’t turned back to my powder! I love it because it never looks thick or unnatural on me. If I ever apply it too thick, I just use a brow/eyelash spoolie to blend it out and it softens it up a bit. The thing I like best about this product besides how easy it makes doing my brows, is that it comes with a brush. And I don’t mean a brush that is horrible quality that some products come with and you don’t even use (I loathe those!). It comes with a mini angled brush that is perfect for brows! For reference, I use shade 04 Medium. (You can find this at Ulta or Sephora for $24)
  7. NYX Matte Finish Makeup Setting Spray: This product goes hand in hand with the NYX Shine Killer primer. They are both obviously geared toward oily skin types, and this setting spray is just another barrier I add to my skin to keep my oils from peeking through. Not only does this spray control my oils, it also helps my makeup last. I find that this is another one of my products that I can tell a difference with when I’m wearing it vs when I’m not. It essentially melts all of the layers of liquid, creams, and shadows I applied together to make my makeup cohesive and it definitely locks it in for all day wear! Sometimes when you apply too many layers or too much powder, your face can look cakey or powdery and this spray definitely helps to soften that build up and make your face look flawless and even natural in a way. This is an item I bathe in, lol, when I know I’m going to want my makeup to last all day! I’ve had problems in the past with my makeup wearing off throughout the day, but I never have to worry about that anymore thanks to this setting spray. (You can find it at Target, Walmart, Drug Stores, and Ulta for approx. $8)
  8. Bare Minerals Gen Nude Matte Liquid Lipcolor & Gen Nude Buttercream Lip Gloss: Did anyone else rock the Bare Minerals Powder foundations back in the day? Or still does? I’m a ride or die for liquid foundations so I drifted away from the cult favorite Bare Minerals powder foundation awhile ago, but a friend recently introduced me to some lip products from them that I was shocked by! For some reason, I never gave this brand the time of day since I stopped using their powder foundation so I was surprised I loved this combo as much as I did! These matte lipsticks are the perfect mousse consistency that doesn’t dry out your lips and is still wearable. I love to top it off with a gloss that adds a little bit of dimension of color to my lips and I swear this gloss makes my lips look poutier! Which, who doesn’t love that?! I am obsessed with the liquid lip in the color Scandal which is a dark mauve/ berry/ brown and the gloss in the shade Sugar. I also love the formula of these products! If you’re in the market for a cheap alternative to lip fillers, lol, this is for you! (You can find the liquid lip for $19 and the gloss for $18 at both Sephora and Ulta)
  9. Physician’s Formula Butter Bronzer: As soon as I opened this product, I fell in love with it without even applying it, lol. It smells straight up like the beach. Thankfully, the product itself was just as good as the smell! It comes in two colors and I have the darker one for reference. This bronzer can definitely be worn on its own but I like to top it over my Too Faced Dark Chocolate Soleil Bronzer I mentioned above. It adds the slightest sheen to the bronzer I am already wearing and just adds another layer of dimension. It definitely lives up to the word ‘butter’ in its name because it feels and applies like butter and just glides on the skin. I absolutely love this stuff and the price point makes it even better! (You can find it at Target, Walmart, Drug Stores, and Ulta for about $14)
